Is CS2 the Same Code as CSGO?

As a long-time Counter-Strike player, I've been following the development of CS2.

A question I've seen popping up a lot is: is CS2 the same code as CSGO? The short answer is no, but it's more complex than that.

CS2 isn't just a simple update to CSGO.

It's built on a new engine - Source 2 - which means the underlying code is fundamentally different.

However, Valve has worked hard to maintain the core gameplay feel that CSGO players know and love.

Here's what's changed:

  1. Engine: CS2 runs on Source 2, while CSGO uses the original Source engine. This allows for improved graphics, better performance, and new gameplay possibilities.
  2. Smoke mechanics: In CS2, smokes are more dynamic. They interact with the environment, seeping through doorways and combining with other smokes.
  3. Networking: CS2 introduces "sub-tick updates," improving responsiveness and accuracy of player actions.
  4. Ranking system: CS2 uses a new "CS Rating" system, replacing CSGO's named ranks with percentage-based rankings.
  5. Potential for more customization: There are hints in the code that CS2 might allow for more character customization than CSGO.

Despite these changes, CS2 isn't a completely new game. It's more like CSGO evolved.

The core gameplay, maps, and weapons feel familiar to CSGO players. Valve has taken this approach to ease the transition for the existing player base and maintain the community-driven aspect of the game.

So, is CS2 the same code as CSGO? No, but it's built on the same foundation. It's CSGO reimagined and improved, not replaced.
